Insuring your electric vehicle with State: Navigating car insurance for EVs and hybrids

March 2024

Hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) have become more popular and common on our roads with their eco-friendly features and efficiency. With their rise in popularity, we answer some common questions around insuring your hybrid or EV.

Which vehicles are covered?

State covers standard-spec electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) under our Car Comprehensive Insurance policy. This means popular models like the Toyota Prius, Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Ioniq, Mitsubishi Outlander and Tesla are all eligible for cover, subject to our underwriting approval.

Is there a difference in cover between EV or petrol-powered cars?

Good news – there’s no difference in cover for EVs and petrol cars. With State Car Comprehensive Insurance, you get the same benefits as you would for a petrol or diesel car. So, your EV, hybrid or PHEV would be covered for accidental loss or damage, fire, theft, and any other optional extras you purchase with your cover.

Other great benefits when you insure your EV with State

Roadside Rescue for EVs, hybrids, and PHEVs

Too busy for breakdowns in your EV? Adding State Roadside Rescue to your policy ensures assistance for EVs, hybrids and PHEVs alike. This feature is available with our Car Comprehensive, Third Party, Fire & Theft, or Third Party Only insurance policies, for confidence on your electric adventures.

Charger loss or damage coverage

Your vehicle’s charger or charging cable isn’t forgotten either. Under State Car Comprehensive Insurance, sudden and accidental loss or damage to your charging equipment is covered. What’s more, under Third Party, Fire & Theft cover, these items are also safeguarded against fire, theft, and specific natural disasters.

Charging stations: Not just a pit stop

Considering setting up a charging station at home? While car insurance doesn’t extend to these stations, a State Home Comprehensive Insurance policy covers them if permanently wired in by a certified electrician.

Navigating the policy

EV battery coverage: The power behind your drive

The heart of your EV – its battery – deserves special attention. Under Car Comprehensive cover, sudden and accidental physical loss or damage to your EV battery is covered. Under Third Party, Fire & Theft cover, battery damage caused by fire, theft, and specific natural disasters is covered. However, mechanical, electronic, and electrical issues, as well as wear and tear, aren’t included.

Electric motorcycles embraced

Not confined to four-wheelers, State’s reach extends to electric motorcycles too. Similar to their petrol-powered counterparts, electric motorcycles find coverage under State’s Motorcycle Insurance policy. With Motorcycle Comprehensive Cover, your electric motorcycle is covered against accidental loss, damage, fire, and theft.

As New Zealand moves electric, State car insurance stands ready with cover for electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles. With knowledge that you’re protected, drivers can confidently embrace the electric driving experience. Drive green, drive confidently busy people.
