Tis the season for festivities! December rolls around, and all of a sudden your diary is jam-packed with events, and for most of us that includes work parties. Don’t be that person this year and brush up on the do’s and don’ts of office parties this silly season.
Don'ts
- Drink and drive – plan before you party! Make it home safely by working out in advance how you’re getting home. This Sober Self Bot is a great tool to have and may give you discounted Uber rides home. If you don’t have Uber in your area, then make sure you have the number for a taxi company handy. Most restaurants and venues are also able to call a cab so it pays to ask your host.
- Party on an empty stomach – keep the hanger at bay by making sure you eat beforehand. Nothing worse than rocking up to a party and finding out that there’s no more food left, or you’re allergic to it so make sure you grab a bite beforehand.
- Assume that you can bring a guest – be respectful to your hosts by checking if you can bring a plus one first.
- Talk about topics you wouldn’t talk about at work – it’s also best to avoid controversial topics like politics, religion, etc and don’t crack offensive jokes or inappropriate comments, and avoid gossiping at all cost.
Do's
- Look after yourself and your mates – taking care of yourself and your mates enables you to celebrate in a safe and respectful environment. Work parties are a great way to get to know your colleagues outside the office so do look after each other!
- Dress appropriately – by all means wear something festive, but you can’t go wrong with still dressing modestly. Same rule applies if your office party has a theme so check the invitation for dress code and themes.
- Drink plenty of water – keep hydrated throughout the day and if you’re planning on drinking alcohol, do so in moderation.
- Have fun – do have fun, relax, and enjoy the company of your, well, company.
When in doubt, it’s best to familiarise yourself with work rules like the code of ethics and conduct, and any other relevant documents your organization may have around behaviour in the office and events. At the end of the day, office parties are still counted as a work event so show your best self and enjoy celebrating achievements over the past year with your colleagues.
